Our Crew


Bryan Custer has been a USCG Licensed Captain sailing the Gulf waters from the Bahamas to Galveston since 2000.  As Founder, and knowing first hand the sacrifices our servicemen and women and their families make, Bryan is very passionate about providing a first-class experience for these heroes.  He oversees the coordination of all aspects of the excursions and organization.  His career as a Deputy Sheriff/Detective for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spans over 18 years.  His attention to detail and keen ability to anticipate any foreseeable problems has kept the excursions incident free.  Bryan is married to Marilyn and they have 4 children, Matt, Ashlee, Cortney, and Brad.

Marilyn Custer has taken a leadership role in establishing the administrative and philanthropic fundraising portion of Freedom Excursions. She organizes the lunches through either the actual preparation or organization of volunteers and handles all the scheduling. She loves to interact with the warriors and their families. She has many years of volunteer service through both serving on boards and coaching youth sports. She also served on and headed several committees while working at the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and is currently serving on several local military councils. Marilyn is also a member of the Blue Star Moms, has 7 years experience in the funeral industry as a Family Counselor and has worked with many grieving families over the years. She also has extensive sales experience. Married to Bryan in addition to their 4 children they also have 4 grandchildren, Audri, Bryanna, Jayden, and Vance.

Matt Custer has a passion for excellence and has earned several Meritorious Achievement Awards in his 3 year career.  Matt has a passion for serving and has volunteered in various capacities most of his life.  On his way home from a training mission in California he learned of a  NCO suffering the destruction of his home due to a tornado.  Upon returning to his duty station at Fort Riley, Kansas, he immediately organized a car wash for the next day and along with 2 of his "battle buddies" raised over $1,000 cash and several donations of household items and food vouchers in only a 6 hour time period.  A Specialist in the US Army Military Police he is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and is currently assigned to Fort Rucker, Alabama. Matt is married to Jennifer, a veteran of the US Army Military Police and they have 2 children, Bryanna and Jayden.

 

 

Donnie Connell

Donnie Connell, as a disabled Veteran himself, he understands the pain and sacrifices his fellow comrades are subject to. He feels it is a privilege to volunteer and serve the veterans and their families.

While a 1st Calvary Sgt. in the US Army he served 3 years overseas and is a Veteran of Viet Nam.

A Life Member of the Disabled Veterans of America, Veterans of America and 1st Calvary Association.  Donnie has also served on the Hillsborough County Veterans Council where was a member of the brick fundraising project,   The Veterans Memorial Council, the Hillsborough County Moving Wall Committee for 5 years bringing the wall to Medard Park. "FIREBASE GOLDEN", and the Manatee County Moving Wall Committee with "FIREBASE HACKET".  Donnie also ran a sucessful Brandon Mayoral Campaign as Campaign Manager for Dave Braun.

Donnie is married to Gloria and they have 4 children,  Cathy, Sheri, Donnie II, and Yancy.  In addition to their children they have 9 grandchildren.
